IMG_3344Nine years after it opened, large garage at the New Rochelle train station needs some work.

The City Council has agreed to allocate $433,000 for the work on the five-level garage, including $380,400 for the low-bidder Schnell Contracting, with extra costs for project management and unforeseen extra work.

The work required includes joint repair and adjustments to the drainage system.

City Manager Charles Strome III said doing the work now would extend the life of the 928 space garage, which opened in 2004.

Built as an “intermodal transportation center,” the garage brought a bus depot to the Metro-North Railroad train station, which also serves as a base for taxi cab companies and offers bicycle parking.

Seven other bids offered to do the job for anywhere from $418,400 to $1.1 million.

The council voted unanimously on Tuesday night to award the bid.

Schnell must complete the work in 120 days, unless harsh winter weather delays the project until spring.
